It’s the most wonderful time of the year…for fans of this quintessential Italian bread, which only makes an appearance every December. To celebrate the festive season, here is a guide on where to buy panettone in Singapore this Christmas 2024.

Panettone is an Italian sweet bread typically consumed around Christmas and New Year. To achieve its tall, round shape and signature dome, the dough has to be leavened for hours – sometimes days – using a technique similar to making sourdough bread. This also gives the bread a soft, fluffy texture. As the bread is stretched and folded, ingredients such as candied citrus fruits, chocolate, and raisins are added. Other bakeries also top it with powdered sugar or a glaze after baking.

Italian restaurants in Singapore are your best bet on where to buy panettone here. Fico has partnered with a family-run bakery in northeast Italy that has been making it since 1882. Da Paolo Gastronomia’s version is fermented for over three days and comes in various flavours. From Acqua e Farina, a panettone that is proofed for 72 hours following a recipe that dates back to the 1900s.

Local bakeries are also muscling in with their versions of panettone. Ami Patisserie throws in raisins soaked in liqueur and Sicilian pistachios. Carlton Hotel fills the bread with hazelnut and brandied cherries. Both Alice Boulangerie and Burnt Ends Bakery adhere closely to panettone’s traditional template, while The Fullerton Hotel makes it local with a pandan kaya panettone. Check them out below.
