IT’S BREAKFAST TIME and rather than listening to my own voice saying, “Have you brushed your teeth yet?” on repeat, it’s completely silent. It’s the kind of quiet that allows you to hear the salty waves crashing nearby—a pause that lets you savor, rather than gulp back, your meal. I’m on a Mother Wild retreat, a getaway designed for mothers looking for both space and connection. It’s a chance to step away from daily routines, to connect with ourselves and other mothers.
Our mornings begin with yoga and breathwork followed by a silent breakfast, where we politely smile at each other but otherwise enjoy the peacefulness in solitude. We take massages on the beach, where powdery sand mixes in with the oil on our backs. There are workshops like “Inner Landscaping in Nature” and “Visionboarding” to help us dream and nurture ourselves, and activities like an ’80s dance party, to remind us to take things a little less seriously.

Our days end with yin yoga followed by uninterrupted sleep, lulled by the ocean. Mother Wild runs one to two retreats per year in Asia; the next is in Gili Meno, Indonesia, May 14-18, 2024, at US$1,899 per person; motherwild.com/retreats.
